RP Embassy in Jordan warns vs travel to Aqaba

GMANews.TV - Friday, September 17
The Philippine Embassy in Jordan has issued a warning for Filipinos against traveling to the city of Aqaba in Jordan due to reported threats of terrorist attacks in the area. In an advisory posted on the website of the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy advised Filipinos to postpone all personal and non-essential travel to Aqaba in the next 24 hours in the light of the security situation in the area. The travel ban came after several embassies in Jordan, including the American and Japanese embassies, issued travel advisories to their citizens citing a “possible imminent threat" in Aqaba Aqaba is a port town in southern Jordan at the northern end of the Gulf of Aqaba, which is Jordan’s only access to the Red Sea. The city is thus strategically important as it is Jordan’s only seaport. A separate advisory from the Embassy on Wednesday also reminded Filipinos residing in Aqaba to exercise caution on September 16 and 17. It advised Filipinos to avoid the port and other crowded areas, remain at home whenever possible and exercise caution when outside their homes.
The Embassy also said that it opened its mobile number (+962 77 743 5435) in case of queries or other information. The advisory was also relayed to the Filipino community leaders in Jordan through text messaging, requesting them to pass the message on to other Filipinos in the country. Two Soviet-type Grad missiles had hit a five-star hotel in Aqaba on August 2, resulting in the death of one civilian, according to reports. The attack was believed to have been launched from outside the country. The Jordanian government, however, has said that security situation in the country is stable and that there are no threats recorded in the entire country, including Aqaba. Government records show that as of December 2008, there were over 24,000 Filipinos working and residing in Jordan.—Jerrie M. Abella/JV, GMANews.TV

21 Fast-Paced Workout Songs You'll Love

It's been far too long since I've shared some new music ideas for you to update your workout playlists, but reading the New York Times Well blog recently reminded me just how important music is during exercise.Recapping several studiesabout music's affects on exercise intensity and perceived exertion, one in particularcaught my eye. In a small study, male college students pedaled stationary bicycles while listening to popular music that the researchers secretly either slowed down or sped up at random, without the knowledge of the participants. When the music was faster, they pedaled faster, liked the music better, and elevated their heart rates more, yetperceivedtheir workouts as less intense than they actually were. When the music slowed down, exactly the opposite happened.

We all know that some good booty-shaking tunes can make our workouts more fun, which is why I prefer to go for beat and music tempo over "motivation" factor, like how the song makes me feel or whether the actual lyrics are particularly inspiring.

If you want to boost the intensity of your workouts and make them feel easier at the same time, try update your workout playlist with one of these upbeat workout songs.

Filipina says she left newborn on plane: lawmaker - Yahoo! Philippines News

MANILA, Philippines – A Philippine woman has acknowledged giving birth to a baby on a flight and then abandoning him in the trash on board the plane, a lawmaker said Thursday.
The baby was found by a security guard at Manila's airport last Sunday in a trash bag unloaded from a Gulf Air flight from Bahrain. The trash apparently came from the plane's bathroom.
Rep. Lani Mercado said the woman explained to her why she had abandoned the baby. She said the story was heart-wrenching and urged the public not to judge the woman harshly.
"She admitted it's her child," Mercado told reporters after meeting briefly with the woman at Manila's National Bureau of Investigation headquarters. "Let's all pray that there will be a happy ending to this story."
Mercado, who serves on legislative committees on children and women, refused to provide other details of the meeting, saying government investigators had asked her not to divulge information about the woman. It was not clear why she was allowed to meet with the woman, but lawmakers often get involved in high-profile cases.
The 30-year-old woman was located Wednesday in the remote northern province of Apayao after investigators set out to find the person who sat in a bloodstained seat on the plane.
Authorities brought her to Manila for questioning and testing. They did not release her name.
Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman, who has custody of the baby, cautioned that it is still not certain whether the woman is the mother.
She earlier said authorities plan to conduct DNA tests on the woman and the baby and that it would take at least a month to establish whether she is the parent.
"We want to be very sure that we won't ascribe this act to the wrong person," Soliman told The Associated Press.
The mother could face criminal charges for abandoning her child, Soliman said.
The six-pound, nine-ounce (three-kilogram) baby _ still attached to the placenta _ was found wrapped in tissue paper. Airport officials said the baby, already bluish in color, may have died within a few minutes had he not been found.
The baby, temporarily named George Francis after Gulf Air's flight code GF, is now fine but underwent an X-ray because of two bumps on his head, welfare officer Thelsa Biolena said. The results have not yet been released.
About 20 couples, including some from abroad, have offered to adopt the boy, she said.
Local media have speculated that the mother could be one of the many Filipino women who work as maids in the Middle East. About one in 10 Filipinos works abroad, many as domestic workers and laborers in the Middle East, to escape crushing poverty and unemployment at home.

'No-Calorie Noodles': Will You Try Them? By:Stepfanie Romine

Have you heard about the newnoodles that have no calories? It's true. These noodles have no calories, fat, gluten or carbs. Made from a soluble fiber derived from a Japanese yam, the noodles have been available in Japan for years.

Some health professionals and manufacturers say the lack of carbs and fiber make these a viable food source for those who have diabetes, celiac disease or gluten intolerance.

Their texture is similar toshirataki noodles, which contain the same fiber (glucomannan). Shirataki noodles--named after the shirataki yam (konyaku)--have been popular for a few years, but they have about 20 calories a serving because of the tofu they also contain. (The yam is also known as konjak, konjaku, devil's tongue, voodoo lily, snake palm, or elephant yam.)

However, not everyone is a fan of the noodles, and for reasons other than their slimy texture and fishy smell straight from the bag. (The smell goes away if you rinse them, and they morph from a squishy, squidlike texture to firm noodle texture as you heat them. I ate them while living and traveling in Asia.)

The research I did on the noodles didn't mention that this isn't the first time konjac has been popular--and that the fiber it contains has been banned in some forms and in some countries.

Glucomannanhas been banned in Australia and other countriesbecause it poses a choking hazard, and Canada's federal health departmenthas warned against taking supplements containing glucomannan without sufficient fluid intakefor the same reasons. Health Canada also recalled some powders, tablets, and pills containing glucomannan earlier this year.

Health Canada warned that without consuming at least eight ounces of water with glucomannan, risks include "choking and/or blockage of the throat, esophagus or intestine, according to international adverse reaction case reports. It is also important to note that these products should NOT be taken immediately before going to bed."

Konjac candy has caused several deaths due to choking (one familywas awarded $50 millionafter their 3-year-old choked to death on konjac gel candy). The U.S. Food and Drug Administrationhas announced recallsof candies and sweets containing konjac gel and issued several warnings regarding choking hazards.

I couldn't find much information on the amount of fiber in the noodles, so there's no way for me to compare how much glucomannan is in them compared with the candy or the supplements. (If you find it somewhere, please share it with me.)

While living in Korea, I atejellyand noodles made from this yam, and they are among the few Korean foods I dislike. (Savory, starchy gelatinsare a popular side dish in Korea.)

All other information aside, I'm not a fan of these noodles. I would much rather eat smaller portions of a "real" food or abstain from it. In my opinion, the fewer calories a processed food has (bread, pasta, cookies, crackers, etc), the less flavor it has as well. As calories, fat, and ingredients go down, additives rise.

I know everyone has different opinions and palates, and shirataki noodles are wildly popular, so I imagine these will be as well. Even Hungry Girl, who loves shirataki noodles, says that "Miracle Noodles" taste like they have no calories.

How about you? Will you try them? Have you? Do you think that "no-calorie" foods can be delicious?

After fielding an anonymous tip, police at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport pulled the 52-year-old captain off the airliner and gave him a breath test,Bloomberg News reported. Readings showed the pilot had a blood-alcohol content of 0.023 percent, a spokesman for the Netherlands Police Agencytold CNN. He was fined more than $900 and then released, the spokesman said.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration doesn't allow pilots to fly within eight hours of drinking alcohol. The pilot's blood-alcohol level also came in higher than the legal driving limit in the Netherlands, which has some of Europe's toughest drunken-driving laws. Holland also prohibits pilots from flying within 10 hours of drinking.

The unidentified pilot lives in Woodbury, N.J. The Boeing 767 he was piloting Tuesday had left the gate and was taxiing toward the runway when police hurried out to intercept the flight, Bloomberg reported.

Delta said its Flight 35 from Amsterdam to Newark was canceled "out of concern that a crew member appeared to be unfit for duty." In a statement on its website, the airline said it is cooperating with a police investigation, and conducting its own probe into the crew member, who has been suspended from duty.

All 196 passengers were moved to other flights, Delta said.

Tuesday's arrest is at least the third such incident on a commercial airliner in recent months. Last November, a United Airlines pilot failed a breath test in London and was charged with operating an aircraft under the influence. An American Airlines pilot was arrested in London in May 2009, after passengers complained that he smelled of alcohol before a flight to Chicago.

Filipina Gurls version of lyrics

Greetings loved ones
Let's take a journey

[VERSE 1]
I know a place
With white sand & clear waters
Fun in the sun
Where it's warm & really humid
Sippin' mango juice
Laying under coconut trees--(relaxed)
The boys in a jeep
Turn their heads to get a sneak peek (at us)

You could travel the world
But nothing comes close
to the Philippine coasts
Once you party with us
You'll be falling in love
Oooooh Oh Oooooh

[CHORUS]
Filipina girls
We're unforgettable
Pretty smiles
And all looking young
brown or light skin
So hot
nice personalities
Oooooh Oh Oooooh

Filipina girls
We're undeniable
Smart, works hard,
with talents that rock
All Pinays represent
Now put your hands up
Oooooh Oh Oooooh

[VERSE 2]
Big families
We love to sing karaoke (and dance)
Throw parties,
watch Pacquiao
So come on over, have adobo (with rice)

Every Little Thing

Let me in
to see you in the morning light
to get me on and all along the tears they come
see all come
I want you to believe in life
but I get the strangest feeling that you've gone away
will you find out who you are too late to change?
I wish I could be
every little thing you wanted
all the time
I wish I could be
every little thing you wanted
all the time
some times

lift me up
just lift me up don't make a sound
and let me hold you up before you hit the Ground
see all come
you say your all right
but I get the strangest feeling
that you've gone away- you've gone away
and will you find out who you are too late to change?

I wish I could be
every little thing you wanted
all the time
I wish I could be
every little thing you wanted
all the time
some times

Don't give me up
don't give me up tonight
or soon nothing will be right at all
salvation
will you find out who you are too late to change?

I wish I could be
every little thing you wanted
