I am issuing this statement to clear my name in the current controversy in which I allegedly posted a highly insensitive and offensive message on the social networking website, Facebook, in relation to the victims of typhoon Ondoy that recently struck parts of the Philippines.

About two years ago, an anonymous source created these accounts using my identity, posting my personal details, my real pictures captioned roughly and attacking other people. Because of these incidents, I reported such abuses and sent my credentials to the administrators of such sites, particularly Facebook. I have been abused and am still being abused online in social networking websites such as Facebook, Friendster, Multiply etc.

In the early stages, I was advised by close friends to ignore the situation, saying this would simply go away. Unfortunately, it has not stopped. Hence, I filed a complaint with the Dubai Police about eight months ago hoping they could help me with my problem. Should anyone wish to check my statement, my case is still under investigation with said authorities.

Time passed and these sites continued to generate malicious, obscene and cruel messages that are widely exposed and relayed to the public under my name.

Yesterday, September 27th 2009, I received phone calls from my close friends regarding very alarming posts in the above mentioned websites that directly offended flood victims as a result of typhoon Ondoy..

These malicious statement(s) which are posted under account names Jacque or Jackie are not of my doing. It is unfortunate that such statements were maliciously attributed to me and I do sympathize and understand the adverse and somehow verbally violent reaction that has been elicited by such insensitive statements or posts. Rest assured, I have taken every legal step that can be done in this regard.

I too, have become a victim as much as those who may have lost their lives and properties to such a devastating natural calamity. This recent controversy has greatly affected my reputation, my family, and my friends. I am devastated and shocked at the extent my character, my personal information and private space have been violated.

I have a deep respect and regard for my country. I am proud to be a Filipino and would never say or do anything to harm the interest of my country or countrymen. I have also had the privilege of participating in civic-oriented activities in Dubai, particularly in trying to help my fellow countrymen seek employment during the height of mass layoffs brought about by the ongoing global financial crisis, as well as those seeking employment for the first time. Making a mockery of any unfortunate incidents befalling any of my fellow Filipinos is simply contrary to my character. I condemn the person or persons behind these malicious acts to impute damage on my integrity and I hope that you can dig deep into your hearts and minds to truly find the truth in all these.

MANILA, Philippines—So sorry, But no sorry.

Pummeled with criticisms, Malacañang Monday refused to apologize for the purportedly extravagant dinner that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her delegation had last week at a famed restaurant in New York.

“If the dinner was really ostentatious, then there has to be an apology, but it wasn’t ostentatious and I stand by that,” Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said in a media briefing when asked if the Palace would apologize.

Remonde has pointed to Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez as the guest who paid for the dinner that a New York tabloid said cost $20,000 (almost P1 million).

But Romualdez’s office in Tacloban City Monday denied that the lawmaker was the generous soul who picked up the tab. It said it was Romualdez’s brother, Daniel, who shouldered the bill.

“That is unfair. It was not FM (Ferdinand Martin Romualdez) but his brother Daniel who footed the bill,” lawyer Nick Esmale, the congressman’s legal and media liaison officer, said on the phone.

Esmale said Daniel, an architect living in the United States since 1986, was among the most successful Filipinos working in New York and among the highest paid in his field.

Representative Romualdez is a nephew of former first lady Imelda Marcos, one of the richest members of the House of Representatives, and the senior vice president for finance of the ruling Lakas-Kampi-CMD. He is considered one of Ms Arroyo’s closest allies.

A gracious invitation

A visibly dismayed Remonde spent a good part of his day fielding questions about—and warding off criticisms against—the dinner at the world famous Le Cirque restaurant during Ms Arroyo’s latest visit to the United States.

In what he promised to be Malacañang’s “final” statement on the matter, Remonde maintained that Ms Arroyo and First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo were simply invited to the dinner by Romualdez.

Remonde said it would have been “impolite” for the First Couple to inquire about the restaurant or the menu.

“It would also (have been) impolite for the First Couple to turn down an invitation graciously made by a distinguished congressman,” he said.

“We will not glamorize this issue any further.”

‘Source was a blog’

But apparently still smarting, Remonde said he finally located the “source” of the information detailing what Ms Arroyo and her party supposedly had at Le Cirque—a blog.

He said the blog made assumptions about how the bill could have reached close to $20,000, based on the menu.

One computation making the rounds of blogs pegged the total bill at $19,866 with such items as Wild Golden Osetra Caviar ($1,400) and 11 bottles of Krug champagne ($5,610).

The widely circulated New York Post, which reported on the dinner, said Ms Arroyo “ordered several bottles of very expensive wine, pushing the dinner tab up to $20,000.”

Remonde insisted the meal that Ms Arroyo and her group had at Le Cirque was “simple” and without caviar and champagne.

Threat of lawsuit

In a radio interview, Remonde also said it wasn’t surprising if Ms Arroyo was invited to dine at a decent restaurant.

“If you invite the President to dinner in New York, (you won’t have it in) a hotdog stand, right?” he said.

One lawmaker said the dinner was to celebrate the Arroyos’ wedding anniversary.

Even so, militant lawmakers said the supposedly lavish dinner was not only unethical but criminal.

“The law shows government officials are prohibited from accepting gifts, substantial gifts, on any occasion,” Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Satur Ocampo said in a press conference.

Akbayan party-list Rep. Walden Bello said the dinner was like a service and equivalent to a gift. He said he and other Akbayan members would file corruption charges against Ms Arroyo in the Office of the Ombudsman.

Standards of ethics

Under the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials, government officials are prohibited from accepting gifts or anything of monetary value from any person in the course of their official duties or in connection with any transaction which may be affected by the functions of their office.

Presidential Decree No. 46 punishes public officials from receiving gifts on any occasion, as well as private individuals who give the gifts to officials.

The anti-graft law also penalizes receiving gifts or any material benefit from any person for whom the public officer has secured or obtained, or will secure or obtain, any government permit or license. It also bans receiving gifts in connection with any government transaction.

Was it really Romualdez?

Bello wondered whether it was Romualdez who really paid for the dinner or whether he was just allowing Malacañang to use him to take the heat off it.

“He should speak up, and not take the fall for the sins of Malacañang,” he said.

Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teodoro Casiño chafed at Remonde’s remark that Ms Arroyo could not be expected to eat at a hotdog stand.

“And why not? Is the President so extraordinary that she can’t do what most Pinoys in New York do, which is eat at hotdog stands and cheap restaurants?” Casiño said.

Doubtful Cruz

Roman Catholic Archbishop Oscar Cruz, an outspoken critic of Ms Arroyo, scoffed at Malacañang’s claim that the dinner in a classy restaurant was a “simple” one and that the reported P1 million tab was an exaggeration.

“Practically everybody knows that the place where they dined and wined is definitely not a place where people get a simple dinner,” Cruz said.

Had Ms Aquino wanted a simple dinner, she should have chosen a “simple restaurant,” Cruz added. “What is being paid in the restaurant is actually not the food but the ambiance there.” With reports from Leila B. Salaverria, Dona Pazzibugan and Inquirer Research

Fake AntiVirus

Conficker also installs fake antivirus software

Researchers have discovered another feature of the Conficker worm that provides an additional clue about the intent of the creators--the worm installs malware that masquerades as antivirus software, Trend Micro said on Friday.

The worm, which has infected millions of Windows-based computers on the Internet, is downloading a program called Spyware Protect 2009 and displaying warning messages saying that the computer is infected and offering to clean it up for $49.95, according to the Trend Micro blog.

If you see this pop-up message, chances are your computer is infected with Conficker. The latest feature of the widespread worm is that it installs fake antivirus software on infected machines.

The infection alerts repeatedly appear and experts are worried that people may be clicking on them and paying for the software just to be rid of the annoying messages, thereby handing thieves their credit card information.

The fake antivirus program also attempts to install a Trojan downloader that is programmed to download new versions of Spyware Protect 2009, according to Kasperky Lab's blog. However, the domain the Trojan downloader was being accessed from has been shut down, the blog said.

The fake antivirus feature further bolsters the speculation that the motivation behind the worm is to make money and not a desire to disrupt computer or network operations.

Researchers were still analyzing new component code of the worm that began being spread via peer-to-peer and being downloaded off domains that host the Waledec worm on Wednesday but were finding the task difficult because the instructions are encrypted.

The worm spreads via a hole in Windows that Microsoft patched in October, as well as through removable storage devices and network shares with weak passwords. The worm disables security software and blocks access to security Web sites.

Despite all the news the worm has made, many computers still remain unpatched, Sophos said. Of the number of people who have used Sophos' free endpoint assessment test to check the security risk of a network since the beginning of the year, 11 percent did not have the Microsoft patch installed, according to Graham Cluley's blog at Sophos.

For the month of March, 10 percent of all of the people who used the Sophos assessment tool were missing the patch, he said. The company did not divulge exactly how many people had used the tool and Cluley said the statistics cannot be extrapolated to represent the number of unpatched systems on the Internet.

In an indication of infection rates, IBM's Internet Security Systems group released statistics that show that the number of unique IPs infected with Conficker.C is increasing slightly.

Based on infections seen through monitoring devices in its IBM ISS' Managed Security Services, the number has grown from just over 64,000 on April 2 to more than 71,000 on April 8, according to the unit's Frequency X blog.

"We've seen around 11 percent more unique IPs in the past few days in comparison to a week ago," the blog said, also adding that the number doesn't necessarily indicate the scope of worldwide Conficker infection.

Nearly 60 percent of the infections monitored by IBM ISS are in Asia, followed by 18 percent each in Europe and South America, and 4 percent in North America, the statistics show. By country, China leads with 16.6 percent, followed by Brazil at 10.8 percent, Russia at 10.2 percent and Korea at 4.6 percent, according to ISS.

We just described what happens on Kido controlled machines when the spambot Iksmas is installed and launched. However, Kido is also downloading a fake antivirus named SpywareProtect2009. Owners of infected computers can see the effects of the SpywareProtect2009 activity.

This is what happens: the fake antivirus starts to show messages every couple of minutes about purported infections as it supposedly ‘detects’ viruses, network attacks, browser issues and so forth:






This fake AV is so annoying that there is a significant probability that innocent users will click on the offer to pay for disinfection – and thus will be defrauded of almost 50 USD. What is worse, their credit card details might also be harvested – with all sorts of nightmarish results.

In addition to launching numerous messages about infections, SpywareProtect2009 attempts to install a Trjoan-Downloader.Wind32.Fraudload.ecl onto the system. This downloader is programmed to download new versions of SpywareProtect2009. Variant .ecl is downloading these versions from alsterstor.com.

We have notified the registrar of this domain zone and the site was closed down within 20 minutes.
