Related News: Janitor Fish [Tilapia]

A seemingly harmless little fish from South America has suddenly shown up in Philippine waters – and now threatens the livelihood of our local fishermen. First seen in Laguna Bay, then in the Marikina River, the janitor fish has now arrived in Agusan Marsh.

Known as Asia’s largest fish sanctuary, the fishermen of Agusan Marsh recently reported a dwindling catch of tilapia, carp and catfish. Because of its penchant for cleaning up all the algae in a body of water, the janitor fish has eaten up the food meant for the marsh’s longtime residents. Its sharp teeth have also been known to destroy fishing nets.

Kara David travels to the Agusan Marsh where fishermen show her how quickly the janitor fish population has grown and the damage it has done. She then visits Marikina, where the local government has found a solution to this fish problem – and finds out if this can be replicated in Agusan.

Watch I-Witness this Monday late night on GMA.
